University, organizers gearing up for Trivia 47

Break out the snacks, literature books, movie reels and of course the computers, tablets and notebooks – it’s Trivia time.
Trivia 47: “Not Your Father’s Contest” begins at 6 p.m. Friday, April 15, and runs through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 17. The world’s largest trivia contest runs 54 hours and this year has 432 questions, including running questions, the Trivia Stone and three music questions.
While there are new aspects of the weekend-long game, Coordinator Jim “Oz” Oliva is keeping those snippets to himself.
“Teams can expect a lot of fun,” he said.
Registration will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 11, through Thursday, April 14, and from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the 90FM studios on Reserve Street, Stevens Point.
Registration is $30 per team. Teams of any size may register and only one representative from each team must be present to register; registration forms are available on the website: www.90fmtrivia.org.
Upon registration, teams will receive the “Trivia Times” booklet which contains additional information on the contest such as locations for running questions, the first clue for the Trivia Stone and music question turn in times.
The first part of Trivia actually begins this weekend, though, with the Trivia Kickoff Movie, which will play at midnight Friday, April 8 and again at 10 a.m. and midnight Saturday, April 10, at Roger’s Cinema on Church Street. Doors open at 11:15 p.m. for the midnight shows and at 9:45 a.m. for the morning viewing. Tickets are $3 and the movie is for all-ages and kid appropriate, Oliva said.
The annual Trivia Parade begins at 4 p.m. Friday, April 15, in University Lot Q at Maria Drive and Illinois Avenue. It continues west on Maria Drive to Isadore Street, left (south) to Portage Street, left (east) to Phillips Street, right (south) to College Avenue, left (east) to Reserve Street, left (north) to High Street, right (east) on Fremont Street, right (south) to Sims Avenue, left (east) to P.J. Jacobs Junior High School.
This year’s theme, “Not Your Father’s Contest,” recalls America’s love with cars by referring to a vintage Oldsmobile commercial. A classic car is part of the logo on Trivia posters, T-shirts and merchandise available for sale.
The Trivia contest is hosted by WWSP 90FM at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where people already are preparing for a wild ride.
“Overwhelming numbers of people return to Stevens Point during Trivia weekend,” said Eli Frieders, a senior communications major and 90FM station manager. “Thanks to the community’s support and the preparation by Oz, (John) Eck (Eckendorf) and the staff, we’re able to put on this wildly successful contest year in and year out.”
Oz and Eckendorf dream up and pen the questions for the contest each year, beginning in January. It is the best part of the entire contest, Oliva said.
“We take notes throughout the year, bits and pieces here and there, then when the actual composition time comes, we sit down and start writing from the notes, records, books, comic books, other stashes of stuff, newspapers, and magazine,” he said.
The internet doesn’t really play a part in all of it, at least not for the preparation.
“John and I write the entire contest without depending on the internet for one single question,” he said. “(We) just (write) crazy, ridiculous questions. I can only suggest that people listen to the contest to really appreciate how ridiculous the questions really are. They are quite funny.”
Each question in the contest might run for two songs, except singing questions (an audio of snippets of songs) which run for three songs, and the final question which will run for one song. Each team is limited to one call per question.
Each question is between 5 and 500 points, depending on the number of teams answering a question correctly. Just before the top five or 10 teams are read at the end of the newscast, the point values of the previous hour’s questions are announced. There also will be two running questions; organizers ask that teams do not collaborate on the questions.
The running questions are given at specific locations in Stevens Point at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings. Teams are asked to gather information within “running” distance of the meeting sight.
The Trivia Stone “question” is a scavenger hunt-type question whereby teams are instructed to follow certain clues that lead throughout the city and countryside. Three times, teams are asked to have their “Trivia Times” booklet stamped, which earns the team more points. Stamps are turned in at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Scores will be updated about every two hours or so on the internet at the trivia web site,
www.90fmtrivia.org, and every four hours on cable access television.
