Plover PD kicks off first-ever fundraiser for new K-9 dog, equipment

The Plover Police Dept. announced on Friday it will be adding a K-9 unit to its police force — the first in the village’s 45-year history.

The K-9 unit, according to a news release from PPD, will be an “instrumental tool” to help improve safety in the village and the health of its residents.

“We hope this is just the beginning of a very important program for our community,” said Plover Police Chief Dan Ault. “We must do everything possible to combat illegal drug use in Central Wisconsin.”

The K-9 unit will serve as an asset for the department, Ault said, noting the village has in recent years seen a booming economy and population growth.

“The new K-9 unit will be predominantly used for narcotic and illegal drug detection, along with search and rescue efforts,” he added.

Plover police have planned a public fundraising event on April 22, when the fundraising campaign officially kicks off. Just as with the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Plover’s K-9 program will be funded solely by donations.

The fudsraising event will include a K-9 demonstration and kids activities, along with hot dogs, cookies and cake. The dept. will also be selling what Ault referred to as “some very cool t-shirts” to help the cause.

“It should be a great time,” he added.

The public is invited to the fundraising event, beginning at 5 PM on Fri., April 22 at the Plover Police Dept., 2400 Post Road. Updates will be provided on the department’s Facebook page.
