The city’s first ordinance control officer has a new gig.

Dan Trelka, who was hired in June to patrol property ordinance violations in the city, has left the position for a job in the Stevens Point Police Department. Trelka is the department’s new community service officer, a position responsible for parking enforcement and collecting abandon bicycles, among other duties.

City Inspector Jim Zepp had no comment on Trelka’s sudden departure, which was not mentioned at the April 11 personnel committee meeting. As of Monday morning, Trelka’s name is still listed as the city’s ordinance control officer on the city’s website.

Community Development Director Michael Ostrowski said Trelka’s last day in his department was April 15.

“[Ordinance] violations will still be handled within our department, by the building inspectors,” Ostrowski said. The department employs two inspectors, as well as a part-time electrician and part-time plumber. “It is those two main building inspectors who would handle any of those property maintenance notifications we have open.”

The position of ordinance control officer is not being eliminated, according to Ostrowski, who said the city is undergoing an update to property maintenance codes.

“I want to get to updates to our codes complete prior to getting a new person on board,” he said.

The public will be welcome to give their thoughts on updates to property maintenance codes at next Monday’s city plan commission meeting. Ostrowski said if all goes well, the updates will be completed by the May common council meeting.
