SPASH Tennis Takes Win Over Everest

By Rob Whitmire
The SPASH boys tennis team improved its Wisconsin Valley Conference record to 2-2 after defeating DC Everest on the SPASH courts Thursday afternoon.
Junior Jon Peck continued his dominating play at No. 1 Singles with a 6-,6-0 win over Ilias Cuertani. Thomas Hardy and Patrick Hefferan both had little problem dispatching their opponents at No.2 and No. 3 Singles. Hardy posted a 6-1, 6-1 win; Hefferan finished his match at 6-0, 6-1.
“We had great play by our top three singles players,” said Panther Coach Gary Baier “They played very steady tennis.”
The Panthers shuffled their doubles teams a bit for the meet and the new look was a success taking two of three matches. Carter Smigaj and Angus Blakeman teamed up at No. 2 Doubles to win 6-0, 6-3 and Kyler Smigaj took the court with partner Joe Deikelman to post a 6-0, 6-1 win for the Panthers at No. 3 Doubles.
“Our doubles teams are getting better and I was happy with their play since we just set a new lineup,” Baier said. “To win two of three was awesome; we continue to improve and the attitude of the kids is amazing. I know they will always give 100 percent.”
