SPASH Athletics Recognizes Student Achievements

The Stevens Point Area Senior High held its 14th annual Athletics Award Night on May 9th in the SPASH Auditorium.

Awards presented included Tri-Sport Athlete Winners, Special Athlete Awards, Scholar-Athlete Awards, Collegiate Athletics and Golden “S” Award Winners.

Trevor Anderson, Grant Czaikowski, Hailey Ehr, Sam Hauser, Abigail Hyland, Victor Kizewski, Kimberly Klein, Rachel Muenchow, Fritz Schierl, Autum Shurbert-Hetzel, Taylor Thomas and Hannah Worzella were presented the Golden “S” Award, based on the following criteria:

  1. Earn nine points throughout their high school career. Each letter is one point, being selected captain is one point, and being selected MVP is one point.
  2. Golden “S” points are earned by being a participant in a WIAA sanctioned sport.
  3. Golden “S” candidates must have earned points in at least two different sports.
  4. An athlete will not be eligible for the Golden ”S” award if he or she had any traingin code violation during their high school career.

“We’re very proud of these special individuals and all our award recipients,” said Mike Blair, director of athletics for the school. “These student athletes represent our high school at a very high level both on and off the court, field, or track; congratulations to all of them.”

Sam Hauser and Trevor Anderson were voted the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association “Mr. Basketball” award and the Wisconsin Hall of Fame Male Athletes of the Year. Anderson was also named the AP State Basketball Player of the Year and Hauser the Gatorade State Basketball Player of the year. Channel 7 All-Star awards went to Hauser, Anderson and Sophomore Joey Hauser.

The Girl’s Golf team were awarded Honorable Mention as the Gold Coaches Association of Wisconsin Team Academic All-State.

Senior Scholar-Athlete awards, given to Senior Athletes who compiled a 3.6 GPA and earned three Varsity letters, went to Jaide Barber, Emma Byers, Laura Canapa, Nathan Cebula, Juliet Champion, Morgan Dobratz, Hailey Ehr, Lily Firkus, Payton Gaber, Lauren Gerads,  Ben Harris, Sam Hauser, Jake Hofmeister, Tatum Houlihan, Abigail Hyland, Mack Journell, Jordan Kawlewski, Kim Klein, Lacie Ligman, Evan Mallek, Jacob McChrystal, Sam Medo Tyler Patoka, Katy Pozorski, Maggie Pozorski, Colin Schuh, Alex Scott, Justine Shafranski, Kelsey Shuda, Autum Shurbert-Hetzel, Kathryn Stupar, Taylor Thomas, Kiana Thompson, and Rosabella Wolosek.

“SPASH has a long history of outstanding achievements in athletics and academics and we’re proud to recognize these young people,” Blair said. “We know they will continue to represent the school and the community well in their future endeavors.”

Leroy & Phyllis Heiser Basketball Scholarship: Mack Journell
Heidi Evenson Memorial Scholarship: Lacie Ligman
Girls Soccer Booster Scholarship: Shayna Molski
Fat Boys Golf Scholarship: Kelsey Shuda, Abigail Ter Maat, Taylor Thomas, Jacob Hofmeister
