If you like to watch people run around bases, Moore Barn Memorial Field was the place to be Monday night.

The second week of action at Moore Barn Memorial in the “Buddy Berry” Co-Ed Softball League across from Doug’s Sports Pub saw many baserunners get a solid workout. In the second game, defending champion Airport Bar (2-0) banged out 23 hits and added seven walks as they hammered Jake’s
Team, 20-9.

The losers weren’t too shabby at the plate either as Jake’s cranked out 22 hits. The first game was a pitchers’ nightmare also as Shoe Crew bounced Team BAMF, 15-10. The 1-1 Crew came up with 21 hits while Team BAMF (0-2) had 15 base-knocks themselves.

“I kinda felt sorry for the pitchers because they had to battle that fierce wind,” said volunteer home plate umpire Jesse “The Legend” Higgins. “A lot of batters were walking and hits were dropping in all over the place.”

Jake’s Team, playing their first game of the year, was hanging in there against Airport and actually led, 8-7, going into the bottom of the 5th. And then all hell broke loose when Airport Bar came to take its swings. Steffanie Jackson walked, Josh Swan doubled, Kim Schmitz, Kyle Krieger, and Abby Rottier each walked, Adam Lee tripled, and Megan Lee, winning pitcher James Marthaler, Jackson, Swan and Kim Schmitz each singled and when the dust had finally settled, the winners had nine big runs cross the plate.

That put the score to 16-8 in Airport’s favor.

Jake’s Team added one harmless run in the 6th on singles by Nic Dulmes, Jack Mortimer, Megan Pollack, and Matt Resch, but Airport dodged further damage when centerfielder Abby Rottier robbed Morgan Opper of a hit with a great catch in the outfield and Dulmes was gunned down at home.

“Abby’s catch was huge and it took the wind out of their sails,” Airport Manager Megan Lee remarked.

“That fifth inning killed us,” said Jake Mortimer of Jake’s. “Sure, it was windy and they got some walks, but we kicked the ball around a lot, too.”

The hitting stars for Airport were shortstop Josh Swan who went five for five; Steffanie Jackson added four singles and a walk; Adam Lee had three hits, and James Marthaler singled, tripled and homered.

Jake’s Team had three hits each from Nic Dulmes, Megan Pollack, Matt Resch, Jake Mortimer and Kevin Hurd. Hurd also smacked a 2-run homer in the second and Dulmes
left the yard one batter later.

BATTING STATS: AIRPORT BAR: Abby Rottier: 2 singles, walk; Adam Lee: 2 singles, triple; Megan Lee: single, 2 walks,
Tyler Mader: 2 doubles; James Marthaler: triple, single, 3-run homer in 6th; Steffanie Jackson: 4 singles, walk;

In the night’s opener, Shoe Crew led off with seven runs in the top of the first against TEAM BAMF. The Crew had singles by Melissa Dombrowski, Andy Horst and Amber Hintz; doubles by winning pitcher Kyle Norwood, Joe Kinsella, and Max Delap and Norwood’s second hit in the inning following Jared Shilka’s triple. BAMF countered with two runs in their half of the opening inning on singles by Graham Edwardson, Kim Brockman, and Danita Briggs sandwiched around Brad Ashland’s double. Brad Ashland hit three doubles during the tilt.

“Geez, that team can really hit!” Exclaimed BAMF’s leftfielder Erin Laffe. “They had three doubles and a triple just in the last inning.”

This was true. Andy Horst tripled and Sam Stuard, Joe Kinsella, and Max Delap each doubled to put the contest out of reach.

“I give BAMF a lot of credit; those Ashland brothers (Brad and Chris) were on base all the time,
and Lakyn Lloyd had three walks,” The Crew’s Tammy King said. “This was not an easy win for us.”

Nine of Shoe Crew’s 21 hits went for extra bases. Max Delap and Joe Kinsella each doubled twice while Norwood and Sam Stuard rapped two-baggers. Andy Horst, Delap and shortstop Jared Shilka each came up with triples. Brad Ashland led the way for BAMF with three doubles while Graham Edwardson doubled and tripled.
