A Plover woman has been sentenced to jail, probation and community service after pleading no contest to punching another woman in the face at Buffy’s Lampoon in February.

Selena Van Tassel, 23, was convicted of substantial battery- intend bodily harm in Portage Co. Circuit Court last week.

According to the criminal complaint, Van Tassel drove to the downtown tavern on Feb. 14 expressly to punch the woman, who was then her best friend. The victim and witnesses told police Van Tassel entered the bar, called the woman a “homewrecker”, punched her in the nose — reportedly because the woman had an affair with Van Tassel’s boyfriend — then immediately left.

Just as Van Tassel was driving away, a bouncer at the bar flagged down a passing police officer to report the assault. Van Tassel reportedly had to begin work at 4 AM in a local gas station, where police later arrested her.

Police were also called to Ministry St. Michael’s Hospital, where doctors said the woman’s nose was broken in four places.

When police came to Van Tassel’s workplace to question her about the incident, Van Tassel admitted she punched the woman, according to the complaint, telling officers she learned of the affair via text message. Van Tassel saying she “did not regret” what she’d done.

Judge Thomas Flugaur sentenced Van Tassel to six months in jail with Huber privileges, 24 months of probation and 40 hours of community service. She could be released after three months in jail with a positive risk assessment. She also must pay a fine and court costs.
