Stevens Point police were called to SPASH last week after a caller reported some late-night activity in the school’s parking lot.

Police responded to the parking lot at 11:47 PM on May 15 to find several of the parking lot’s decorative boulders had been moved out of place near the southwest exit.

“It’s a suspected student prank — that’s just an opinion, I can’t say that as a fact. But we will be doing extra patrols over there,” said Tom Zenner, assistant chief of SPPD. “Historically, we’ve had issues at the high school this time of year.”

Police records show the caller had described suspicious activity in the school parking lot near Second Avenue. Zenner said whoever was responsible must have “gotten spooked” and left the area before police arrived.

Officers found not only had the boulders been moved, but the culprit or culprits had left behind a three-wheel all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and trailer, ostensibly for relocating the large rocks.

What’s more, Zenner said, is the ATV and trailer were stolen from a residence elsewhere in the county.

“I don’t know how they did it, but the officers moved the boulders back into place,” Zenner said, adding the ATV and trailer were towed away at police request.

The 53-year-old male owner of the ATV and trailer declined to press charges, likely because he knew whoever took them, Zenner added.
