I’d Hit That Goes Deep to Sink Sloppy Swats at Doug’s

Home runs were flying out at Moore Barn Memorial Field in Buena Vista Monday night.

The four teams in Doug’s Sports Pub Co-Ed softball action combined for nine bombs in the doubleheader, and most of the pitchers’ ERAs took a big hit. Temperatures were in the 80s and a strong wind was blowing straight out.

“It seemed like every time I looked up, someone was in a home run trot,” said Dave Trebiatowski of Sloppy Swats.

IHT picked up its first win of the young season thanks to three triples, a trio of homers, and 18 hits as they thumped previously
unbeaten Sloppy Swats, 16-9. The Swats countered with 15 hits, seven walks, and two “taters” but still came up short.

I’d Hit That’s Nic Dulmes got the fireworks started by blasting Matt Barden’s first pitch of the bottom of the first far over the left-field fence. IHT went on to score eight more runs in their half of the first on a triple by Morgan Oppor, double by Matt Resch, walks to Jake Mortimer and Rissa Gustin, singles by Jazmin Soto, Megan Pollack, and Ashlee Lillian, and the second homer of the inning by Nic Dulmes.

The Swats pushed across four runs in the top of the first frame on walks to Matt Barden, Nate Pezewski, and Kelly Barden with Jake Roy and Jen Eggleston contributing singles and Evan Volm chipped in a double. Evan Volm also smacked a two-run homer to left in the second.

The Swats only managed three runs the rest of the way. Kelly Barden’s single drove in Nate Pezewski in the third … Nicole Spees hit a single to plate Hillary Trebiatowski in the fifth, and Evan Volm went yard with a solo shot in the sixth.

Kevin Hurd tripled and came home on Jake Mortimer’s sac fly in the third for I’d Hit That. The winners got three more runs in the fourth on singles by Dulmes and Morgan Oppor before Kevin Hurd’s long flyball departed the premises. They wrapped up their scoring with three runs in the fifth behind singles by Megan Pollack, Matt Resch, and Morgan Oppor followed by a triple off the bat of Dulmes.

“We still gave up seven walks, but the wind didn’t help,” said I’d Hit That’s infielder Big Jack Mortimer. “Some of our big guns
really stepped up as Nic, Morgan, Kevin, Jake and Megan all had a fine night.”

“Hey, this was my first game in years, and it felt great to get out there,” said The Swat’s Dave Trebiatowski. “My walk actually set up a run and I hit the ball solidly twice.”

SLOPPY SWATS STATS: Matt Barden: single, double, and walk. Evan Volm: double, single, 2-run homer in 2nd, solo homer in 6th.
Jen Eggleston: 2 singles; Nate Pezewski: 2 walks; Hillary Trebiatowski: single; Jake Roy: 2 singles; Kelly Barden: 2 walks, 2 singles; Dave Trebiatowski: walk, hit ball hard twice; Nicole Spees: walk, 2 singles. I’D HIT THAT: Nic Dulmes: Leadoff homer in 1st, 3-run homer in 1st, single, triple. Morgan Oppor: triple, 2 singles; Kevin Hurd: triple, 3-run homer in 4th; Jazmin Soto: single;
Jake Mortimer: walk, single, double; Rissa Gustin: walk; Megan Pollack: 3 singles; Matt Resch (winning pitcher): double, single.
Ashlee Lillian: single.

Time of Game: 59 minutes.

AIRPORT BAR HAMMERS Team BAMF (Briggs, Ashlands, Morgan, & Friends), 24-12.

The good news for BAMF is that they belted three homers to Airport’s one. The bad news for the losers was that they were outhit, 26-15. Airport Bar had two huge innings. They scored nine runs in the first and 12 more in the fourth.

There was no joy in Mudville for the Bammers as Airport’s Adam Lee and James Marthaler singled, Meg Lee doubled, Stefanie Jackson walked, and left-fielder Tyler Mader socked a long grand-slam home run to left that might’ve just came down. Airport added 12 more big runs in the fourth inning as Mader, Sue Gruba, and Kyle Krieger each singled twice, Kim Schmitz doubled and hit a sac fly, Meg Lee doubled, and James Marthaler, Stefanie Jackson, Josh Swan, and Kelsey Holderman each chipped in run-scoring singles.

“Hey, 26 hits; we’ll take that any day,” said Airport manager Meg Lee.

Team BAMF had a nice second inning with six runs crossing the plate. The runs were courtesy of doubles by Graham Edwardson and rookie outfielder Bobby Sullivan with singles by Danita Briggs, Corey Blake, Melissa Dombrowski, Jen Eggleston (on loan from the Swats), and Jake Bailey. BAMF tallied four more in the fourth thanks to singles by Bailey, Morgan Edwardson, Graham Edwardson, and Brad Ashland’s booming three-run blast to left-center. BAMF got its final two runs in the 5th when Corey Blake scampered around with an inside-the-park homer to right past a diving Sue Gruba, and one batter later, Bobby Sullivan knocked one out of the park for his first career homer.

“I’d like to thank Notre Dame, God, and the wind,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan was filling in for Chris Ashland who was in Vegas with Lakyn Lloyd for Lakyn’s birthday.

Team BAMF’s STATS: Graham Edwardson: double, single. Danita Briggs: single. Brad Ashland: single, three-run homer in fourth. Corey Blake: single, inside-park homer in fifth. Melissa Dombrowski: single; Bobby Sullivan: double, solo homer in fifth;
Jen Eggleston: single; Jake Bailey: two singles, double; Morgan Edwardson: single, two runs. AIRPORT BAR’s STATS: Adam Lee: three singles; Meg Lee: two doubles; James Marthaler: three singles; Stefanie Jackson: two singles, walk; Tyler Mader: two singles, grand slam homer in first; Sue Gruba: two singles; Josh Swan: three singles; Kim Schmitz: single, double, three RBI’s; Kyle Krieger: four singles; Kelsey Holderman: two singles.

Time of Game: 45 minutes.
