City Times Staff
Junior Poppy Princess Katelyn McDowell, 5, sells poppies to passersby Friday morning at the Stevens Point Post Office.
Katelyn McDowell was joined by her mother, Stacey McDowell, second vice president for the Post 6 American Legion Auxiliary. Poppies were handed out at the post office on Friday until 3 PM.
The Poppy Program was created in 1921 as a symbol of the service and sacrifice of United States veterans. The red crepe paper poppies are handmade by veterans as a part of therapeutic rehabilitation. Funds raised by money donated for poppies go towards veterans programs.
Poppy sales this year began May 18 and end Saturday, May 28.
Poppy sales continue Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM at the following locations: Trigs, 1600 Academy Ave.; Fleet Farm, 5590 U.S. 10; Shopko, 1200 Main St.; Copps, 1500 Pinecrest Ave.; and Kmart, 111 Division Street.
