Plover native and former Stevens Point Area Senior
High School (SPASH) standout Joe Pavelski and the San Jose Sharks lost to the
Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in overtime in Game 2 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals
Wednesday, June 1, to trail 2-0 in the best-of-seven series.

Pittsburgh opened the series with a 3-2 win at home
Monday, May 30. The Penguins scored two goals in the first period to take a 2-0
lead, while the Sharks answered with a pair of goals in the second period to
tie the game, before Pittsburgh scored the eventual game winner with 2:33 left
in the third period to take a 1-0 series lead.

In Game 2 Wednesday night, Pittsburgh’s Phil Kessel, a
Madison native, scored at the 8:20 mark of the second period to give the
Penguins a 1-0 lead.

It remained that way until late in the third period,
when Justin Braun scored with 4:05 left to tie the game at 1-1, and eventually
send it into overtime.

Pittsburgh’s Conor Sheary then scored an unassisted
goal 2:35 into overtime to give the Penguins a 2-0 series lead.

The series will shift to San Jose for the next two
games, as Game 3 will air on NBC Sports Network at 7 p.m. Central Saturday,
June 4, with Game 4 Monday, June 6, at 7 p.m. Central on NBC.

The final three games are scheduled to be broadcast on
NBC, all at 7 p.m. Central, with Game 5 Thursday, June 9, Game 6 Sunday, June
12, and Game 7 Wednesday, June 15.

Pavelski leads the NHL in goals this postseason with
13 and is tied for second in points with 22.
