More than $20,000 has been raised so far for the 2016 Gun’s Hoses annual drive to benefit local veterans.
The latest donation, $1,000, was made by the Stevens Point Junior Woman’s Club. Kate Smallwood, a member of the club, said the group was “proud” of all the work the Guns’n Hoses planning committee was doing.
“We’re just so proud of all the work you’re doing for the vets,” Smallwood said on Monday during the check presentation. “We just wanted to do something to help.”
The planning committee is organizing the annual exhibition charity softball game between local police and firefighters, planned for Aug. 27. The game will kickoff with the “first pitch” thrown by veterans from each era of service since WWII.
The committee has raised enough funds to purchase a a new track chair for rental by veterans who have trouble getting around local parks and hunting grounds. Remaining funds will go directly to local veteran assistance programs and the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.
