WANTED: SPPD Seeks Info on Simultaneous Downtown Fights

By Brandi Makuski
Stevens Point police are looking for information on two separate incidents of violence that occurred on Saturday, June 5.
According to police documents, officers responded to “multiple individuals” engaged in two fights occurring simultaneously at the corners of Main and Second streets at 2:30 AM.
“Both incidents appear to be related,” Assistant Chief Tom Zenner said on Wednesday.
Zenner said according to the incident report, two men, a 32-year-old from Wausau and a 31-year-old from Stevens Point, sustained “substantial injuries” including concussions, a chipped tooth, a broken nose and multiple stitches to one man’s ear.
Police on the scene say they believe some witnesses to the fight captured the incidents on cellphone video cameras — and according to Zenner, the city’s downtown cameras caught at least part of the violence on tape.
“Although we do have video, it’s still an active investigation and we’re not going to be releasing that,” Zenner said, adding to do so could taint the investigation, which could prevent witness identification from being introduced in any future courtroom proceeding.
“But there are still unanswered questions, and as with any open investigation we are seeking additional information, so we’re looking for any witnesses down there who may have video.”
Callers can remain anonymous if they wish, Zenner said.
Anyone with information should call the Stevens Point Police Department at (715) 346-1500 and ask to speak with Det. John Lawrynk, or call Portage County Crime Stoppers at 888-346-6600.
