Aspirus to Expand on City’s East Side

Stevens Point Plan Commissioners this week unanimously approved a 40,000-square-foot expansion for Aspirus Clinic.
The health care provider already has a 34,717 square foot two-story medical clinic in the Portage Co. Business Park.
Community Development Director Michael Ostrowski said the 11-year-old building will add an emergency department and trauma center, now making it classified as a hospital.
“They are therefore required to go through the conditional use permit process, but in all reality, most of it will still be a clinic-based use, which is a permitted use within that district,” he said.
No hospital beds are planned for the site, he added.
“They can provide the urgent or emergency care; if someone requires more additional care or more extreme care, they would be able to transport them to a level-one hospital facility,” Ostrowski said.
The proposal still has to go before the full city council later this month.
