The Stevens Point City Band, under the direction of Kathryn Kawleski, will present its sixth concert of the summer season on Wednesday, July 13 at 7:00 PM in the Pfiffner Pioneer Park band shell.

“A Halloween Happening” will be the theme as the band plays a variety of spooky music, including “Chillers and Thrillers”, “Haunted Clocks”, Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Macabre”, “Michael Jackson Hit Mix”, “Music For A Darkened Theatre – Film Scores of Danny Elfman”, “The Phantom of the Opera – Soundtrack Highlights” and “Ghost Riders In The Sky”.

Fred Jewell’s “The Screamer” will be the music for the weekly children’s march. Audience members are invited to dress in costume in keeping with the evening’s theme.

Fred Alton Jewell was born in Worthington, Indiana in 1875. Jewell started with the Gentry Brothers Dog & Pony Show at age 16 playing euphonium and calliope. He made his way to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus band and established himself as a prolific composer of screamers – also known as circus marches – and other band music. He ended his circus affiliations in 1918 after stints with the Hagenbeck-Wallace and the Sells-Floto Circus band and returned to his hometown to become the high school band director. The Screamer was penned in 1921.

As always, Michele’s Restaurant and Catering of Stevens Point will provide food for purchase before and during the concert. Concerts are free and held Wednesday evenings through August 3.

Audience members should bring chairs or blankets for seating. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the gymnasium at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School, 1919 Wyatt Avenue, Stevens Point..
