A new art exhibit, “In Our Midst – Wisconsin’s Contemporary Native American Art” will soon be opening at the Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum, 800 Main Street.

“In Our Midst” features the work of some of Wisconsin’s most notable Native American Artists, many with regional and national reputations.

An opening reception will take place Friday, Sept. 2 from 5 PM to 7 PM. A special performance will highlight the opening and refreshments will be served. The reception is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will feature the Iroquois pottery of Jennifer Stevens and Brenda John, along with the multi-media photography of Tom Jones. Dynamic Acrylics by Scott Hill will hang alongside the Watercolors of Dawn DarkMountain.

Melanie Tallmridge Sainz will exhibit her award winning artwork as will 2016 First People’s Fund Fellow and jeweler Brian Szabo. Artwork in stone will be shown by artists Clarence Cameron and Mike Hoffman. Christopher Sweet and Terri L. O’Connor are each creating art specifically for this exhibit. Debra Fabian will be showing her sculptural furniture and the Iroquois Raised Beadwork of Karen Ann Hoffman will be featured along with the work of her apprentices: Rodrick Elm and Stefanie Sikorowski. James Kelly, photographer and beadworker, will also join the exhibition.

“In Our Midst – Wisconsin’s Contemporary Native American Art” will remain on exhibit through Oct. 23.

The project is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board, with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum is managed by the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra through a cooperative agreement with the City of Stevens Point Parks and Recreation Department.
