Coed softball action was in full swing Monday night in the Doug’s Sports Pub “Buddy Berry” League.

Kim’s Barrel Inn (5-5) blasted Team BAMF (2-9), 18-6 in the nightcap at Moore Barn Memorial while the Sloppy Swats (6-4) squeaked past Shoe Crew (3-8) in the opener, 9-6.

Umpire Jon “Flipper” Lowery made his 2016 debut behind the plate as he filled in for Jesse Higgins who went bluegill fishing in Texas.

The Barrel belted out a bevy of blasts and bloopers as they bedazzled the Bammers. Kim Krayecki’s bashers banged 22 hits including six doubles, three triples, and two home runs. BAMF didn’t help their cause any by committing five errors in the KBI rout which concluded via the twelve-run rule in the bottom of the sixth.

Team BAMF took a brief 2-0 lead in the first inning on Kimberley Brockman’s walk, singles by Lakyn Lloyd and Danita Ashland, and Brad Ashland’s double.

The Barrel picked up four runs in the first thanks to doubles by the blazing-quick Gabe Benson and Nic Dulmes, the first of two triples by Jazmin Soto, and Josh Barnes’ booming home run to right.

“I hung a slider,” said BAMF pitcher Jake Bailey. “I tried to slip it past him, and Barnes knocked it outta the park.”

Singles by Kimberley Brockman and Corey Blake mixed in with walks to Jake Bailey and Brad Ashland accounted for two more BAMF runs in the top of the third.

BAMF got two runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead, 6-5. Their two tallies came in on walks to Chris Ashland and Amy Lupercio and singles by Bailey and Brockman.

And then came the Barrel hammer in the bottom of the fourth. They put up eight big runs thanks to two BAMF errors, triples by Benson and Soto, singles by Morgan Oppor (tunity) and Dulmes, Jack Mortimer’s walk, and Josh Barnes’ second round-tripper of the game. 13-6, KBI.

The Barrel Inn scored four more runs in the fifth when Oppor, Dulmes, Barnes, Megan Pollack, and Jake Mortimer each singled and BAMF booted a couple more ground balls. KBI ended the non-thriller in the bottom of the sixth when they needed one more run to end it. And they got it when Benson doubled and came home on Nic Dulmes’s single.

KBI manager Jake Mortimer commented: “It was a big win for us. Now we gotta knock off the Swats next week to tie them for second.”

Airport Bar (10-0) had the bye and has already clinched first place for the regular season.

The opening game was a doozy. The Sloppy Swats failed to score in the first. Shoe Crew went ahead, 1-0, when Kyle Norwood doubled, moved to third on Jenni Brandt’s single, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Andy Horst.

The Swats tied it at 1-1 in the second when Pat Scheele singled, advanced to second on a walk to Nicole Spees, and scampered home on a double by rookie outfielder Rob King (who coached an Olympic wrestler).

The Sloppys took the lead, 2-1, with another run in the third when Brady Spees tripled and scored on Rachel Graves’ sac fly.

The Crew went ahead, 3-2, with two runs in the top of the fourth. Tammy King walked, Joe Kinsella singled, and they both scored on sac flys.

The Swats came up with six huge runs in the bottom of the fourth. The rally included Matt Barden’s double, an error, and singles by Brady Spees, Tracy Mixa, Jessie Schuler, Nicole Spees, and the “Kinger”. 8-3, Swats.

The Crew closed to 8-4 in the fifth with one run due to base-knocks by Norwood, Brandt, and Andy Horst.

One more run was added by the Swats in the bottom of the sixth when Brady Spees socked his second triple and came home on Matt Barden’s three-bagger.

9-4 Swats as the game approached the top of the seventh. Then the Crew made it really interesting. Pinch-hitter Jazmin Soto walked and Kyle Norwood deposited one into the trees behind the centerfield fence. 9-6. Then Jenni Brandt singled as did Andy Horst but the next two batters hit into fielder’s choices and the game ended when the Crew got a runner thrown out at second on a real close play. 9-6 final.

Umpire Flipper Lowery noted, “It was really neat umping those games. There were some amazing plays out there.”
