Justiceworks JustRun will support community justice programs

This Labor Day weekend presents an opportunity to enjoy oneself while also helping the community in the form of JustRun.

The 10th annual Justiceworks Just Run Half Marathon and 5K, which takes runners through scenic trails in central Wisconsin, will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, starting at 7 a.m. at Pfiffner Pioneer Park in Stevens Point.

Justiceworks, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting restorative justice and rehabilitative programs in Portage County, sponsors and organizes the event to generate funds in order to support the advancement of programs and practices that secure, safe and respectful relationships between offenders, victims and the community. The goal each year to raise $10,000.

“The mission of Justiceworks is to bring people together from all walks of life in the community, finding creative and positive ways to break the cycle of recidivism,” said Amy Maggio, director of development with Justiceworks.

“We are amazed that the event continues to grow each year with more than 300 runners and walkers,” she said. “Events like JustRun 2016 raise much-needed funds for our programs, but more importantly, this event raises awareness and extends important outreach about the power of restorative justice in our community.”

Registration is $50 for the half marathon run/walk and $30 for the 5K run/walk until Aug. 26. After that date, the cost rises $5. Cost for the kids challenge is $10 and the kids quarter mile is free.

Families, individuals, serious runners and walkers and casual lopers are welcome. The half marathon is chip certified. Registration is available online at www.active.com or at www.justiceworksltd.org/just-run-half-marathon-5k/.

Proceeds will support restorative justice direct service programs including the Family Law Information Center, victim restitution mediation program, community-based offender mentoring programs and annual community education forums.

Pre-race registration is available at the Pfiffner Building from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. Race day registration open at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, with the half marathon walk beginning at 7 a.m., kids’ quarter mile run/walk/crawl for kids ages 10 and under begins at 7:30 a.m., the half marathon run/5K starts on the Clark Street Bridge at 8 a.m.

The race course allows runners to enjoy some of the most beautiful running trails in central Wisconsin, including historic downtown Stevens Point, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) campus, Schmeeckle Reserve and the Green Circle Trail.

Race day activities include a variety of live music along the course, followed by an awards ceremony and evening jazz at the riverfront.

Initially, JustRun was organized as a 5K fundraising event directed primarily at students and Justiceworks supporters. It took place in the fall after the start of the semester at UWSP and was originally held at the school’s outdoor track. It included ribbons and medals for participation, awards and recognition.

The event really grew in numbers and outreach when the course was changed to a half marathon/5K and became connected to the Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend, Maggio said, and was designed as an “early” half marathon training for the fall marathon season.
