Rosholt Fair will mark 90 years

One of the largest fairs in the area will wrap up the summer season, celebrating 90 years over Labor Day weekend.

The Portage County Fair of Rosholt will take place Friday through Monday, Sept. 2 through Sept. 5. Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday; admission is $5. A weekend pass is $12. Monday will follow previous years’ admission: free. Ride wristbands are $17.

While admission is free Monday, there is a charge for the demolition derby, which begins at 1 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12.

While each day will offer its own options for exhibits and activities, the standards also will be available: homegrown fruits and vegetables, as well as prized animals, will be showcased. Vendors will have deep-fried foods and other goodies for purchase, carnival rides for kids, and there’s a lineup of live music performances throughout the weekend.

Softball games, horseshoes, museum, sawmill and blacksmith also will be on hand.

The Labor Day Run will be held in conjunction with the fair. The run will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Fair Hill Park, and offers a 5K, 10K and a 1.3-mile fun run. Medals will be given to top runners in each age category, and a cash prize is awarded to the top male and female runners.

Registration is $13 per runner in advance and $15 the day of the event. Water and fruit will be provided for all runners.

The Portage County Fair can draw crowds of more than 25,000 people during its three days, a number that has been growing during the last several years.

Many local organizations and nonprofits benefit from the fair, through donations, food stands and ticket sales.

The annual Saturday parade will begin at noon, and lineup will take place at the Rosholt High School. The parade will feature hay trailers, tractors and a mini car train. This year’s theme is “The Roaring ’20s.” As in the past, the parade leads off with the local Nelson-Kaminski Post American Legion Color Guard.
