By Jacob Mathias
A two-minute car ride to and from a sober living facility aroused suspicion and left a Plover man with another felony meth charge.
Adam Hughes, 23, was arrested on Aug. 3 after he allegedly returned to a sober living facility on the 2900 block of Lindbergh Ave., high and in possession of meth.
According to the criminal complaint, an employee at the facility reported Hughes left the home at 8 AM and met a car on the corner of Rice Street. The car dropped Hughes off at the facility “two minutes later”, and when he returned the facility, he was acting as though he were intoxicated, according to the complaint.
The facility employee later police Hughes showed him four syringes hidden in his pillow case upon his return. Hughes then told the employee, according to the complaint, he was going to take a shower and leave the house because he was “feeling paranoid”.
Once Hughes was in the shower, the facility leader called police as well as Hughes’ probation officer.
When they searched his room, officers uncovered the syringes from his pillowcase, along with a baggy containing 0.61 grams of methamphetamine, according to the complaint. When officers attempted to question Hughes, he appeared “fidgety and odd” and refused to speak, the complaint reads, and he was taken into custody.
Hughes made his initial appearance in Portage Co. Circuit Court by video from jail on Aug. 22 with his attorney Erik Mcfarland.
He faces charges of felony possession of methamphetamine, which carries a maximum of a $10,000 fine or three years and six months imprisonment.
Hughes had previously been charged with his third OWI and methamphetamine possession, stemming from an incident in March. Since that case is pending, he also faces bail-jumping charges.
Hughes is currently held on a $500 cash bond. He returns to court on August 29 at 3:00 PM for a preliminary hearing.
