An attempt to elude a pursuing officer has landed an Amherst Junction man in court.

According to the police report, a Portage Co. deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle at 10 AM on Aug. 19. The deputy noted the driver, 31-year-old Corey Schoenrock, had a suspended license.

The deputy activated emergency lights near County Rd. H and 3rd St., pursing Schoenrock. When the defendant didn’t slow down, the deputy sounded his siren.

Schoenrock still did not pull over.

The deputy followed Schoenrock when he turned onto Trout Creek Road. The vehicle appeared to be stopping, so the deputy turned off his siren and began to slow down — when the defendant again accelerated, turning onto Deer Lane.

Schoenrock continued driving at speeds of up to 70 mph while on the wrong side of the road, and veering onto the gravel and grass along the shoulder. The deputy reported the defendant came to a stop in the driveway of his home on the 600 block of Deer Lane.

Schoenrock exited his car. When the deputy asked him why he didn’t stop, he said he didn’t know what he did wrong or why the deputy was “coming after” him.

When asked if he heard the siren or saw the emergency lights, the defendant said, “I have a lot of things going on.”

Schoenrock makes his initial appearance in Portage Co. Circuit Court on Aug. 29 at 1:30 PM for felony charges of attempting to flee or elude a traffic officer. If convicted he could see a maximum sentence of up to a $10,000 fine, or three years and six months imprisonment or both.

He is currently free on a $200 cash bond and is ordered to not to operate a motor vehicle.
