Fire crews responded to an emergency call at SPASH’s Life Skills Center on Sunday night — but the call turned out to be a false alarm.

The Stevens Point Fire Department received the call at about 9:15 PM. An employee of the Life Skills Center was also summoned to the building Sunday night.

Don Keck, building and grounds manager for the district, said he suspects a defective pull station inside the building was to blame.

“That’s not uncommon, but normally it doesn’t set the alarm off,” Keck said by phone Monday. “We’ll get it replaced, though.”

Keck said alarm systems in each of the district buildings are testing annually by an outside company, and the equipment is replaced as needed. But the public can be assured the building is safe for students and employees, he added.

“This is a brand new building; we’ve already occupied it for a full year, and it was thoroughly inspected,” Keck said.

The building opens to students on Sept. 1 — the first day of classes for public school students.
