Gary was born on Dec 21, 1955 in Wisconsin Rapids, to the late Rodney and Myrtle (Dammann) Vollert. He was raised by Myrtle and his stepfather Bernard Konkol after the early passing of Rodney. He was preceded in death by his sister, Donna.
Gary was married to Renee Gollon on Dec 29, 1973. They celebrated over 40 years of marriage. Together they operated the bait business throughout that time, and as their sons grew they joined the business, too.
He was the owner and operator of Northern Bait, bait wholesaler and distributer, live bait harvester and bait shop. He especially enjoyed spring bait trapping and the thrill of catching lake shiners. He truly enjoyed talking to his customers in the bait shop, and listening to their many fish stories. He cherished time with his grandchildren and looked forward to their daily visits.
In his early years he worked at Bake Right Bakery. He was an ace at archery and was known for shooting several Robin Hoods. He was an avid Cubs fan, through all their lousy years. He loved his dogs, and always had a dog in his home.
He is survived by his wife Renee (Gollon) Vollert; two sons, Michael (Cassandra), Stevens Point, and Andrew (Crystal), Stevens Point; three grandchildren, Alexandria, Airiana and Clayborne; and one brother, Korey Konkol, St. Paul, Minn. He’s also survived by his father-in-law Ray Gollon.
Gary will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his easy going personality, his forgiving, openhearted nature, and his welcoming smile.
