Three seniors at Stevens Point Area Senior High have been named as Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Avalon McDonald-Lewis, Samantha Strook and Erin Tschida were all recognized by SPASH Principal Jon Vollendorf last week.
All three students received a Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, according to a news release from the school district.
Commended students are those who have demonstrated academic excellence, according to SPASH counselor Jenessa Reid.
“It’s based on placing among the top five percent of the 2015 PSAT exam, which they did last fall,” Reid said by phone on Wednesday.
The students were among the top scorers out of 1.6 million students who took the exam nationally, Reid said.
