Amherst, SPASH, Almond-Bancroft set for playoffs

The Amherst and Stevens Point Area High School (SPASH)
football teams will be at home for Level 1 of the WIAA Playoffs this week, while
Almond-Bancroft will hit the road for its playoff opener.
Top-ranked and top-seeded Amherst (8-1, 6-0) will host
eighth-seeded Oconto (4-5, 3-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21; fifth-ranked and
second-seeded SPASH (8-1, 7-1) will host seventh-seeded Green Bay Preble (5-4,
5-4) at Community Stadium at Goerke Field at 7 p.m. Friday; and seventh-seeded
Almond (7-2, 4-2) will travel to play 10th-ranked and second-seeded Loyal (8-1,
8-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Amherst, defending WIAA Division 5 State Champion, won 42-6
at Wittenberg-Birnamwood (2-7) last week to win the Central Wisconsin
Conference-8 (CWC-8) Title outright and earn the top seed in its Division 5
playoff group.
“Playing at home is great, you don’t have to travel, and you
get to play in front of your home crowd,” said Amherst football head coach Mark
Lusic. “After nine games, we earned a first seed, and the key part now, though,
is that nobody gives a crap that we’re Conference Champion or not, or what our
record is.
“Now everybody’s 0-0,” he said. “Our goal is just to play
well and try to move on.”
