James ‘Jim’ Peterson

James “Jim” Peterson, 81, Plover, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016,
at his home while under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.
Private family services were held per his wishes.
A memorial in his name will be established at a later date.

Mr. Peterson was born March 2, 1935, in Escanaba, Mich., a son
of the late Irving and Frances Peterson. He graduated from Escanaba High School.
He attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and
graduated from UW-Stevens Point, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He entered the U.S. Army March 1, 1955, in Escanaba, Mich.
He served as a private first class with the 97th Engineer Battalion. He was
honorably discharged Feb. 7, 1957, at Fort Sheridan, Ill.
He was married to Helen Smokovich Sept. 7, 1957, in Escanaba,
Mich.
After the marriage, the couple settled in Milwaukee before
moving to the Stevens Point area.
He worked for the Portage County Health and Human Services
as a Counselor for many years until his retirement in 1992.
In his younger years, he helped the Department of Natural
Resources, especially with the Sea Lamprey Control and the Blister Rust Control
projects.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; four children, Christine,
Michael, Susan and Matthew; one brother, Jack (Joan) Peterson; and five
grandchildren.
