Amherst earns fifth consecutive trip to State Semifinals

The top-ranked and defending State
Champion Amherst
High School football team advanced
to the WIAA Division 5 State Semifinals for the fifth year in a row with a win
at home over ninth-ranked Winnebago Lutheran (9-3) in a Level 3 Playoff Game
Friday, Nov. 4.
The Falcons (11-1, 6-0) got out to a 14-0 lead less than
four minutes into the game and held off Winnebago Lutheran the rest of the way,
as they went on to a 44-27 victory in their final home game of the season to
move a win away from their third consecutive State Championship Game
appearance.
Amherst will take on second-ranked Stanley-Boyd (11-1) in
the State Semifinals at Merrill at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, with the winner to
go to the WIAA Division 5 State Championship Game at Camp Randall Stadium in
Madison at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16.
“It’s crazy,” said senior offensive guard/defensive lineman
Mike Singer. “It’s a sad moment to have our last game here, I loved it all four
years, but it’s great right now.
“I’m just ready to keep on going, and ready to get even better,” he said.
“That was one of the most physical teams we played all
year,” said senior quarterback Brandon Piotrowski. “We came in and knew we were
playing a great team.
“They never gave up, we never gave up, and it was just a
great stand we made,” he said.
