Falcons end unexpected run this season with another State Championship

After the 2015 Amherst
High School football team
became the highest-scoring team in state history on its way to winning the WIAA
Division 5 State Title with a 14-0 record, the Falcons entered this season with
lowered expectations.
Amherst
lost a senior group that formed the winningest class in school history, and had
plenty of question marks throughout its lineup on both sides of the ball.
The Falcons overcame an early-season loss this fall to
return to the State Championship Game for the third season in a row, where they
pulled out a last-second victory to end their season with a State Title.
“A lot of people didn’t think we were going to go this far,”
said senior wide receiver/cornerback Josh Cisewski. “They kind of downgraded
us, just losing a lot of guys like Tyler (Biadasz) and Garrett (Groshek).
“But I had faith in my class, and I knew that we were going
to be able to fill all of the spots with the upcoming juniors,” he said. “And
everybody stepped up.”
“The way we looked in August, I thought we had a chance to
be good,” said seventh-year Amherst
football head coach Mark Lusic. “But this is by far the biggest growth I’ve had
in a team, from start to finish.”
