Last-second win gives Amherst back-to-back State Titles

The Amherst
High School football team
won its second consecutive State Title in a wild WIAA Division 5 State
Championship Game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison Thursday, Nov. 17.
The top-ranked Falcons led 28-14 at halftime, before
seventh-ranked Cedar Grove-Belgium (12-2) opened the second half on a 21-0 run
to go up 35-28 in the fourth quarter.
Amherst (13-1) used a one-yard touchdown run with 5:12 to
play to tie the game, while junior Carter Zblewski kicked a 26-yard field goal
with nine seconds left to give the Falcons the State Title with a 38-35
victory.
“Everyone told us we couldn’t do it, we couldn’t come back
after losing everyone (from last year),” said senior offensive guard/defensive
lineman Mike Singer. “It was the hardest game I probably ever played in my
life, they were one hell of a team, and I’m glad we can end it the right way.
“We played so hard, it came down to the last seconds and I
give Carter a lot of credit for kicking that field goal,” he said. “This is
just amazing.”
“You’re excited, but you’re also relieved,” said Amherst football head
coach Mark Lusic. “Every time they touched the ball, it was scary.
“But it was a great team effort overall,” he said. “It was
two evenly matched teams, we both took shots at each other, and we just made
one more play than they did.”
