Clark St. resident Jef Schobert works on his snowy tribute to the late astronaut John Glenn.

The statue of Glenn almost didn’t happen. Initially, Schobert planned to turn his snowy “Trumposaurus” — the previous piece of snow art in his yard — into a series of small Gremlins, but changed his mind when Glenn’s death was announced on Dec. 8.

Schobert has been creating snow art in his front yard for about eight years, regularly changing from one design to another.

“I take the same shape and I just morph it,” he said.

Schobert said he sometimes recycles “junk” to use for some of the elements in his art. In this case, he used a piece of Styrofoam to fashion the American flag adorning the astronaut uniform.

Schobert changed his “Snow Art Zone” later to Santa’s sleigh, and plans to continually change the scenery in his front yard throughout the winter.

“Being in front of audience all the time, having to perform, makes you better,” Schobert said. “Where I am located, the reaction I get, has made me try harder.”
