Vernon E. Hagen, 85

Vernon E. Hagen, 85, of Stevens Point, passed away on Dec. 26 at Atrium Post Acute Care Center in Stevens Point.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1919 Wyatt Ave., Stevens Point, at 11 AM on Friday, Dec. 30.. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 10 AM until the start of the service. Condolences may be offered online at www.pisarskifuneralhome.com.
Vern was born in the Town of Alban, Wis., on February 27, 1931, the son of the late Alfred and Cora (Hole) Hagen. He married (the late) Nancy L. Stiebs in 1956. They had two daughters then later divorced. Vern married Madeline J. Powell in 1984.
Vern served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, receiving two Bronze stars. He was privileged to go on the Honor Flight in 2014.
Vern worked in construction most of his life. He was employed at Vetter’s Manufacturing Company (later SNE) for 11 years, leaving as foreman of the cabinet department in Stevens Point in the 1960s. He then focused on building houses, eventually becoming known as Hagen Homes & Realty. He built approximately 250 homes and one apartment building.
He was the first home builder in the area to get his real estate license. He was one of the first home builders in the area to have an open house.
After he retired from home building and real estate, he had several different jobs including being a greeter at St. Michael’s Hospital for six years until he retired in 2004.
Vern is survived by his wife; his daughters, Jan (Ernie) Flatoff, Plover, and Sue (Mike) Zarecki, Junction City; and stepchildren, Becky (Tom) Mayek, Stevens Point, Eric Powell, Milladore, Laura (Mike) Smith, Kentucky, and Amy Powell, Fla. He is further survived by four grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Vern was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Donna Hagen.
