In the first game with Kent Dernbach as the interim head
coach, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team
went on the road and knocked off defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (WIAC) Regular Season Champion UW-La Crosse Saturday, Jan. 7.

The Pointers jumped out to an early lead on La Crosse (9-5,
1-2) and pulled away down the stretch for a 76-58 victory, and then held on to
win 71-68 over UW-Stout (11-3, 2-1) at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse
Wednesday, Jan. 11.

UWSP (8-5, 2-1) will travel for back-to-back road games in
the next week, as it plays at seventh-ranked UW-River Falls (13-1, 3-0) at 5
p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, and at UW-Platteville (7-7, 0-3) at 7 p.m. Wednesday,
Jan. 18.

“There was certainly a look in their eye, to not only fight
through the adversity that presented itself to us last week, but also to get
back in the conference race,” said Dernbach of the win over La Crosse. “We
needed to go over there and we needed to play well, and we had to come away
with a ‘W’ if we were serious about being one of those teams that’s in the race
to win a Conference Championship.”
