Wayne J. Scheider, 87

In the early morning of January 20th, Wayne John Scheider peacefully passed away at home.
Not quite 88 years old, Wayne was born February 5, 1929, in the Town of Buena Vista, to the parents of Edward and Mary (Deutscher) Scheider. He attended area schools graduating from Almond High School in 1946. His father’s death left Wayne, at the age of 19, to continue farming with horses to care for his mother.
In 1954, he married Joan Newby and, after Wayne’s family farm was sold in 1955, he began a 33-year career with the State of Wisconsin Civil Service.
After purchasing a home in Arlington in 1956, supporting involvement in all high school sports activities, Wayne took his sons on a successful hunt in Wyoming; hunting in the West and here in Portage County became a major family interest.
In recent years, his two sons, four grandsons and one daughter-in-law have continued his hunting tradition. Wayne was quick to share pictures of the family’s latest successful hunt with anyone who might stop by.
In 1979 as the responsibilities for two aging mothers evolved, Wayne voluntarily stepped out of management as a Grounds Supervisor at U.W. Madison to qualify for a civil service transfer to UWSP as a groundskeeper. The purchase of the Harrison & Loretta Newby property, a 160-acre farm and a small mobile home park, plus full-time jobs kept this family busy.
Wayne retired in 1988 and after the mobile home park was sold in 1999, Wayne and Joan occupied themselves with feeding out a few steers each year. Gardening, nurturing Wayne’s apple and plum trees as well as the mowing and landscaping of their property were efforts in which he took great pride.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Marvin, Wayne’s faith carried him thru many hardships – in 1995 the first below-the-knee amputation, followed by a pin in his left hip, triple bypass heart surgery, the fusion of C3&4 and a second amputation – gave this peaceful man many challenges. Mobility was accomplished with a Dixon mower- not only mowing endlessly, but gardening and maintaining pasture fences.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Joan; sons Edward (Karen) & Thomas (Christine) Scheider; six grandchildren, Andrea (Ryan) Anderson, Daniel (Laura), Harrison (Keely), Shelby and twins Garrett and Colton; plus six great-grandchildren, Brayden and Brooks Anderson and two sets of Scheider twins, Miles and Carter, and Adahline and Grayson. Wayne was a proud patriarch.
In lieu of flowers a memorial in Wayne’s name will be established at a later date.
