Two Suspended After Fight at SPASH

Two 16-year-old boys have been suspended following a physical altercation at SPASH on Jan. 16.
Several squad cars responded to the school, located at 1201 Northpoint Dr., at 12:54 PM last Monday, according to police records, after two students, one from SPASH and the other from the Charles F. Fernandez Alternative High School, began fighting while waiting for the bus.
“Apparently the two [boys] have a history, and there were reports that part of what initiated this fight was gang-related,” said Assistant Police Chief Tom Zenner.
Zenner said the incident occurred during bus transfer on an early release day at the school, and so a large group of students were gathered to watch the fight, which didn’t help school officials in breaking it up.
“When your police liaison [officer] calls in for backup, you know there’s a problem,” Zenner said. “It did require several officers to assist in breaking it up.”
A request for comment from school district officials has not been returned.
