Trace Strahle, senior defenseman from the UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey team, steadies seven-year-old Ariyanna Enerson on the ice rink at K.B. Willet Arena on Jan. 30.
The two were part of an annual ice-skating trip held for about 140 second grade students from Bannach and Plover-Whiting elementary schools, who were joined by hockey players from UWSP and SPASH.
The trip has been organized by second-grade Bannach teacher Kris Kunkel for past 21 years.
Kunkel said the elementary school students are pen pals with each other, and the trip was a chance for the kids to finally meet in person.
“We’ve had students meet as pen pals out on the rink, then become friends at SPASH when they get to high school,” Kunkel said. “It really is a small world.”
Enerson is a student in Jayme Shirek’s class at Plover-Whiting Elementary School.
