SPASH student attends State Officer Day at the capitol

Brooke Shefchik, Stevens Point Area Senior High School student and vice president of competitive events for Wisconsin FCCLA, visited the Wisconsin state capitol in Madison Thursday, Feb. 9, for the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) Government Day.
Shefchik learned about civic leadership and citizenship while meeting with and asking questions of legislators and government officials on career and workforce topics. More than 60 student state officers from across Wisconsin attended the event.
“Wisconsin’s career and technical student organizations have a long and proud history of serving students,” said Tony Evers, state superintendent of public instruction. “By participating in these organizations and events like CTSO Government Day, students are learning about citizenship, teamwork, and other leadership skills that will help them graduate from high school ready for both college and careers.”
The six career and technical student organizations involved are DECA, an association of marketing students; FBLA, an association of business students; FCCLA, an association of family and consumer science students; FFA, an association of agricultural education students; HOSA, an association of health science students; and SkillsUSA, an association of technology education students.
CTSOs are the intra-curricular student organizations that enhance the career and technical instruction offered in more than 400 Wisconsin high schools. The groups help students develop civic, social and technical skills for high-skill and high-wage careers.
