UWSP men’s hockey wins WIAC Title

The fourth-ranked UWSP men’s hockey team (18-4-3, 7-1)
clinched the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Regular Season
Title with a 4-1 win at seventh-ranked UW-Eau Claire (16-7-3, 5-4) Saturday,
Feb. l1.


Junior Willem Nong-Lambert scored on assists from freshman
Logan Fredericks and sophomore Tanner Karty to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead at
the 17:33 mark of the first period, while Eau Claire scored a power-play goal
1:33 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1.


Senior Lawrence Cornellier gave UWSP the lead for good with
a goal on assists from seniors Jacob Baber and Kyle Sharkey at 4:19
of the second period, while
sophomore Ryan Bittner scored a power-play goal on assists from Barber and
freshman Drew McLean at
15:05
of the second period to make it 3-1.


Fredericks
had an empty-net goal on an assist from Karty with 57 seconds remaining to
close out the win, while junior Max Milosek had 22 saves.


The Pointers received the top seed in the WIAC Tournament
and an opening round bye into the WIAC Semifinals, where they will host either
fourth-seeded UW-Stout (11-12-2
,
3-5) or fifth-seeded UW-Superior (
7-16-2, 1-6-1)
in a series at K.B. Willett Arena Friday, Feb. 24, and Saturday, Feb. 25.
