SPASH’s Koontz twins, Groshek advance to State Tournament

Reigning Division 1 State Champions Brady and Dylan Koontz
will each look to close out their careers at Stevens Point Area Senior High
School (SPASH) with a run for another State Title, when they are joined by
freshman Justin Groshek at the WIAA Division 1 Wrestling Individual State
Tournament this weekend.
The trio each won an Individual Title at the River Falls
Sectional Saturday, Feb. 18, as the NCAA Division 1 The Ohio State University-bound
Koontz twins advanced for the third year in a row and Groshek earned his first
trip to the Individual State Tournament at the Kohl Center
in Madison
Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 23-25.
“Team-wise, we were short on numbers this year, and frankly
I thought we wrestled well as a team to get as many dual victories as we did,
and our bottom four were just lights out for us all year,” said SPASH wrestling
head coach Rob King. “So it’s a bummer that (fifth-ranked junior) Chance
(Bailey at 126 pounds)
won’t be down there with us, he lost to two very solid kids last weekend at the
Sectional.
“But for Justin and the twins, it’s just a testament to how
hard they’ve worked this year,” he said. “Those things don’t happen by
accident, there’s a lot of hours put in, so obviously I’m very proud of where
they’re at right now.”
