Two Stevens Point men are facing charges for allegedly verbally abusing police officers–and striking a squad car–after they were denied entry to a downtown tavern.

Jamal Khiry Krause-Simmons, 25, and 22-year-old Alexander Louis Schmidt are both facing charges of disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.

According to the incident report, Krause-Simmons and Schmidt flagged down a patrolling Stevens Point police officer at 10:26 PM on Feb. 17 to complain they couldn’t get past the bouncer of a tavern on the corner of Main and Second streets. The officer observed Schmidt had droopy eyes and appeared intoxicated, and suggested he was barred from entry because he may have had too much to drink.

The response angered Krause-Simmons, who then demanded the officer exit his vehicle so he could “have further words” with the officer, according to the report.

“The officer then attempted to remove himself from the situation, but as he tried to drive away the suspect struck his squad car, at which point he stopped the vehicle and proceeded to place him under arrest,” said Assistant Police Chief Tom Zenner.

As an additional police squad arrived at the scene, Krause-Simmons and Schmidt became verbally combative, calling the officers several vulgar names, and also threatened a violent act of a sexual nature against one officer’s mother.

“Then he accused the officer of being a racist because he wouldn’t assist [Krause-Simmons] in gaining entry to the bar,” Zenner added.

Both men resisted officers but were eventually placed in handcuffs. Krause-Simmons continued to resist after being cuffed, physically bracing himself against the frame of the squad car door, preventing the arresting officer from placing him in the backseat. Another officer had to enter the backseat through the opposite door, according to the report, and pull Krause-Simmons into the seat via the collar of his winter coat.

After being buckled in the backseat, Krause-Simmons also got his hands stuck behind his knees after attempting to manipulate his cuffed hands under his feet and to the front of his body.

He also spat in the backseat, which required officers to later disinfect the squad car.

Krause-Simmons has also been charged with hit and run in an unrelated matter and is schedule for a jury trial in June. He is free of a $1,000 signature bond and returns to court on March 6.

Schmidt is free on a $450 signature bond and also returns to court on March. 6.
