SPASH gymnastics ready for Team, Individual State Meets this weekend
For the 10th time in 11 years, the Stevens Point Area Senior
High School (SPASH) gymnastics team will head to the WIAA Division 1 Team State
Meet, while it also will send three to the Individual State Meet the following
The Panthers finished with a team score of 134.525 at the
WIAA Division 1 Chippewa Falls Sectional Saturday, Feb.25, to place second
behind Chippewa Falls (134.725) and ahead of Eau Claire Memorial/North
(133.075) for a trip to Team State at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School at 2
p.m. Friday, March 3.
Junior Olivia Clemens was third in the all-around
competition at the Sectional to qualify for the WIAA Division 1 Individual
State Meet at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, March
4, where she will be joined by sophomore Renee Hinchcliffe (vault and balance
beam) and freshman Abby Stupar (vault).
“The main goal is always to get the team to state, because
it’s such a super-cool experience and super-cool atmosphere,” said Hinchcliffe.
“And to have everyone on the team experience it, then we know how it feels to
work hard and get back here again next year.”
“I’m obviously really excited,” said SPASH gymnastics head
coach Jennifer Bellmer. “At Sectionals we didn’t do our
best, but it’s really cool knowing that, even on our worst day, we could still
be at the top of the pack.
“Our goals for state are just going to try to be to do our
very best, and we want to kind of redeem ourselves from Sectionals, because we
know that we can do much better,” she said. “But it’s just a real treat to be
able to take all of the kids there again and just be able to showcase on the
