Jerry P. (Patrick) Chapley, 85 of Stevens Point, died Wednesday March 8, 2017, at the Portage County Health Care Center.

Jerry was born on July 16, 1931, in Chicago Illinois, a son of the late Edward Sr. and Stella (Pulchinski) Chapley.

He moved to Junction City as a child, attended Junction City schools and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1949. After working in Chicago for a year and a half Jerry joined the United States Navy on January 19, 1951, and was honorably discharged on April 30, 1953.

He was married to Connie Martin in 1955 and together they had two children, Carlin and Mark, later they divorced. Jerry attended the Office Appliance Mechanical Institute in Springfield, Missouri and worked in St. Louis for a year. Returning to Stevens Point he worked for Emmons Stationery Company for 16 years in the service department. His marriage to Janet Wallock took place on July 24, 1972.

His personal achievement was opening Jerry’s Typewriter Service and serving the Wood and Portage County areas until his retirement in 2000. His business was as a Smith-Corona factory appointed service station for the State of Wisconsin.

A notable achievement was winning the Portage County Baseball League Championship on August 27, 1963. He led the league with 56 at bats, 27 runs, 24 hits and a batting average of 429. As an athlete and sportsman he enjoyed baseball, softball, hunting, fishing, horseshoes, playing sheepshead and cribbage. Particularly enjoyable were hunting trips to Canada, out west and Lake Michigan fishing.

Survivors include his wife; Janet of Stevens Point. Daughter; Carlin (Peter Johnson) Rasmussen of Wisconsin Rapids. Three grandchildren; Clayton Rasmussen of Fond du Lac, Jamie Chapley of Stevens Point and Nicole Chapley of Wisconsin Rapids. Sisters; Charmaine Martini of Santa Rosa California and Dolores Martens of Tomahawk. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Mark. Son-in-law; Trent Rasmussen and brother and sister-in-law; Edward Jr. and Mary Chapley. Brothers-in-law; Joe Martini and Warren Martens.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday March 11, 2017, at St. Michael Catholic Church 324 Main Street Junction City. Rev. Dennis Stanchik will officiate. Visitation on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. Full military honors will follow the funeral mass. Burial will take place at a later date in the parish cemetery.
