A 72-year-old woman has died as the result of a single-vehicle accident on March 13.
Emergency crews responded to I-39 near the Janick Circle overpass in Stevens Point at about 8:46 AM. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a Ford F-150 pickup truck had come to a stop off road and up against a tree in a ditch.
The driver, identified at Carol Paur of Waupaca, suffered “severe trauma” as a result of the crash, according to the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office. She was taken by ambulance to Ministry St. Michael’s, where she was pronounced dead.
Her husband, 61-year-old Randolph Paur, was a passenger in the vehicle. He was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, but preliminary reports indicate the vehicle was traveling northbound when the driver lost control and the truck slid down into the ditch, striking the highway fence and two trees. Excessive speed and slippery roadway conditions are initial factors in the crash.
Crews closed off the roadway and northbound on-ramp from U.S. Highway 10/State Highway 66 for 30 about minutes.
Assisting at the scene were the Stevens Point Police Dept., Portage Co. EMS and the Stevens Point and Hull Fire departments, along with Hull First Responders.
According to the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office, Monday’s crash was the second of 2017. The county saw one fatal crash in 2016, and two in 2015.
