Lt. Ryan Fox dons his Honor Guard uniform before leaving the Plover Police Dept. on Wednesday for the funeral of slain Detective Jason Weiland of the Everest Metro Police Department.
Fox was one of many who participated in casket watch — a ceremonial act conducted at the viewing or wake of law enforcement, firefighters/EMTs and the military — during Tuesday’s memorial service for Weiland, and is one of several local police officers attending the funeral, held at D.C. Everest Senior High School in Weston.
Fox said just before the funeral service begins on Wednesday, the Honor Guard will form a “Wall of Honor” in front of the casket, creating a ceremonial wall blocking public view for a brief period of time, allowing the family privacy to say their final goodbyes.
“You’re going to see cops show up from around the country,” Fox said of Wednesday’s funeral. “There were thousands of people at the wake last night.”
