Clarence “Curly” Milfred, 87, Stevens Point, died April 15, 2017.

He was born Aug. 18, 1929, in Cazenovia, Wis., to the late Lawrence and Helen (Manville) Milfred.

Clarence graduated from Cazenovia High School and worked on the family farm before serving in the U.S. Army artillery. He received a marksmanship award during his time of service and was honorably discharged.

Clarence graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) with a bachelor of science, a master of science and a doctorate; and worked as a soil scientist for the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey for a few years.

He married Ann McCauley in Madison Aug. 27, 1966.

In 1970, Clarence began teaching at UW-Stevens Point in the Geography Department. He became a professor in the College of Natural Resources, where he taught until his retirement in 1998.

During summers, Clarence taught students in the College of Natural Resources summer program at Clam Lake and later at Treehaven. For several summers, he also supervised students mapping soils on several of the Apostle Islands for the National Park Service.

In retirement, Clarence served on the Portage County Health and Human Services Advisory Committee and the Community Care of Portage County Long Term Planning Council. He was also active in the Portage County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Milfred; daughters, Sherry (Ryan) LaForest, Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Janelle, Wild Rose; a son, Christopher (Heather) Milfred, Franklin, Tenn.; granddaughters, Mercury, Ella and Alizah Milfred; grandsons, Joseph, Ian and Mark LaForest; his sisters, Kathleen Cornwall, Scottsdale, Ariz., Patricia (Mitchell) Smith, Williams Bay, Wis., and Bonnie Pickett, LaCrosse; a brother, Peter Milfred, Cazenovia; and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service and interment will take place at the Central Wisconsin Memorial Cemetery.
