UWSP music selections include jazz, entertainment, orchestra

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) has three musical events coming up that offer a variety of options to those interested in music.
The UWSP Jazz Band will perform its final concert of the season; the UWSP Soiree Musicale event raises funds for student musicians; and the UWSP Symphony Orchestra will feature an area award winner.
Jazz Band to perform final concert of the season
Enjoy “The Blues, Love and Peace: A Jazz Journey II” as the UWSP Jazz Band performs its last concert of the semester.
The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center (NFAC). Highlights will include performances by UWSP music faculty members Brent Turney, Mathew Buchman and Dave Story in “Come Sunday” by Duke Ellington and vocals by music major Will Toney of Milwaukee in “Alright, Okay, You Win” by Count Basie and Joe Williams.
Concert tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UWSP students, faculty and staff members and youth, and they are free the day of the concert for students with a UWSP I.D. if not sold out.
Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets also may be purchased at the door if available.
The Jazz Band will also perform “Tuning Up” by Toshiko Akiyoshi, “Shafi” by Mary Lou Williams, “Love and Peace” by Arthur Adams, “Songbird” by Rob McConnell, “Hard Sock Dance” by Quincy Jones and “Central Park North” by Thad Jones.
Directed by Professor David Hastings, the band is the second largest ensemble in the Jazz Studies area. It includes a traditional big band setting of five saxophones, five trombones (with the occasional tuba), four trumpets and a rhythm section with piano, bass, vibraphone and drums.
Proceeds support UWSP music scholarships.
Soiree Musicale provides entertainment, music scholarships
An event that celebrates and supports student musicians will be held at UWSP Friday, April 28.
The 19th annual Soirée Musicale begins at 6:30 p.m. in the NFAC. A fundraiser for the Music Department, the event includes a reception with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, followed by a concert in Michelsen Hall at 7:30 p.m. and an afterglow party featuring desserts and a cash bar.
The evening highlights the talents of UWSP faculty, students and alumni.
Admission is $65 per person and includes a concert and pre- and post-performance receptions.
