UW-Stevens Point Jazz Ensemble to Feature Student, Guest Composers

The works of two composers, a graduating jazz composition major and a professional trombonist, will be featured in an upcoming concert of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Jazz Ensemble.
The concert will be held at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, May 9, at Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. The ensemble will premiere “Gail’s Breech” by senior Malakai Flynn of New London. Compositions and arrangements by guest trombonist and composer Michael Dease will be performed, featuring Dease as part of a two-day residency sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point Low Brass Club.
In addition to Flynn’s work, the concert will include “Subterranean” by Ken Schaphorst, “Webster Grooves” and “Little Lucas” by Dease, “Autumn Leaves” by Kosma/Prévert, “The More I See You” by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon and “Roppongi” by Randy Brecker.
Dease teaches jazz trombone at Michigan State University and has taught at Queens College, The New School and Northeastern University. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Juilliard School. He has led residencies and master classes at universities across the United States and recently won the 64th Annual Downbeat Magazine Critic’s Poll for Rising Star Jazz Trombonist.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out.
