Airport Bar, Shoe Crew Wins Kick off Doug’s Season

The 2017 “Buddy Berry” Co-Ed Softball League at Moore Barn Memorial in Buena Vista got underway Monday Night. Shoe Crew (1-0) hammered Team BAMF (0-1), 18-4, in the opener and defending champion Airport Bar (1-0) downed Kim’s Barrel Inn (0-1), 15-9.
The Sloppy Swats (0-0) had the week’s bye. Shoe Crew and Team BAMF were tied at 1-1 after the first two innings. Winning pitcher Kyle Norwood homered in the top of the second, and BAMF notched their run when Justin “Biggie” Buege singled to drive in Jose Lupercio.
The Crew blew the game wide open in the third when they came up with six runs on seven hits. The big rally included singles by Max Delap, Christine Burns, Matt Hodgson, Andy Horst, and Sam Stuard and Norwood’s triple and a double by Amber Hintz. BAMF answered with one run in the bottom of the third on singles by Jake Bailey, Chris Ashland, and Steve Stroik.
The Bammers had something cooking but Shoe Crew’s Joe Kinsella made a diving catch at third and turned it into an inning-ending double play. 7-2 Shoe Crew after three.
The Crew continued its hot hitting in the fourth and picked up four more runs. The big hits were triples by Hodgson and Horst and doubles off the bats of Kinsella and Norwood. 11-2, Shoe Crew. Team BAMF got one back when Leah Phillips’ single sent Biggie home. 11-3.
The Crew scored once in the 5th and added six more runs in the sixth. Hodgson tripled, Horst, Kinsella, and Max Delap each smacked doubles, and Jenni Brandt, Amber Hintz, and Michelle Morrisey contributed base hits. BAMF scored its final run in the fifth when Jose Lupercio’s single drove in Christopher Ashland.
18-4 was the final score. Five broasted chicken dinners from RD’s Diner on Post Road were awarded during the game. Kyle Norwood (Shoe Crew) won one for the league’s first homer…Joe Kinsella (Shoe Crew) for his great play at third…Christine Burns (Shoe Crew) for a great play at catcher…Steve Stroik (BAMF) for his terrific catch at short… and BAMF fan Cole Brockman captured the chicken for catching a foul ball in the stands.

In the nightcap, Kim’s Barrel Inn actually outhit Airport Bar, 19 to 18, but Airport put up six more runs on the scoreboard to win, 15-9. Airport led 1-0 after one on Adam Lee’s solo blast. Airport tallied two more runs in the second when Stefanie Jackson and Josh Swan came home on base hits by Kyle Krieger and Abby Rottier.
KBI tied the game with three runs in the second on singles by the Mortimer brothers (Jack and Jake), Megan Pollack, Nic Dulmes, Erin Widenski, and Jacob Barnes. 3-3 after two. Meg Lee doubled and scored on Sue Gruba’s base-knock to make it 4-3 Airport, but KBI tied the game again at 4-4 when Josh Barnes raced home on Megan Pollack’s RBI.
Airport took a 6-4 lead in the fourth when Adam Lee’s triple plated Krieger and Rottier. Then Airport went nuts with the aluminum in their half of the fifth. They scored seven runs thanks to free passes to Abby Rottier, Sue Gruba, and Kim Schmitz and singles by Adam Lee, James Marthaler, Stefanie Jackson, Josh Swan, and Kyle Krieger. The Barrel could only muster back two runs on a double by Jazmin Soto, triple by Josh Barnes, and Corina Craig’s RBI single. 13-6, Airport.
Airport closed out its scoring in the seventh when Meg Lee walked and came home on Tyler Mader’s two-run homer to center which bounced off Jazmin Soto’s outstretched glove. KBI ended the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the seventh on singles by Jacob Barnes, Jazmin Soto, Josh Barnes, and Corine Craig. 15-9 final.
RD’s Diner broasted chicken dinners went to Airport’s Adam Lee and Tyler Mader for their home runs. KBI’s Jazmin Soto won one for a great catch in center, and Emily Dampier was awarded the chicken dinner for an outstanding job of sweeping the bases between innings.
