Local Teachers’ Organization Recognized for Volunteerism

For the City Times
When representatives of the Stevens Point Area Retired Teachers’ Association (SPARTA), led by President Santha Bickford, attended their District III meeting in Stratford on April 20, a big check—though one they couldn’t cash—was waiting for them.
WREA (the Wisconsin Retired Educators’ Association) honored the local retirees’ 8,835 hours of volunteer work, benefiting more than 63 organizations, with an over-sized check for its total value—$199,229.25. Along with the check, the WREA Board of Directors commended SPARTA and its members for giving back to other organizations and making a difference.
Across the state, WREA members have contributed 259,329.50 hours to more than 1,175 organizations for a total value of $5,847,880.23.
Counting more than 10,000 members and including 60 local units, WREA acts as a professional organization for Wisconsin’s retired educational community.
