A tractor safety course is required for all youth less than 16 years of age who want to drive a tractor or self-propelled implements on a public road way in Wisconsin.
This class covers tractor, implement, skid steer and ATV safety.
Portage County UW-Extension is planning a youth tractor and machinery certification program beginning June 14.
Registrations are due by June 9 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Only 20 spots are available for the class, but a minimum of 10 students is required.
Eligible participants must be at least 12 years of age; must be able to sit securely in the operator’s seat with the seat belt fastened and fully depress clutch and reach all controls. They must also have the strength to shift, steer and hook equipment up to the tractor.
Participants will need to attend the three-hour evening orientation on Wednesday, June 14 from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, and six 4-hour classes, June 19 – 24 from 8 AM to noon.
The registration fee is $40. To be certified, youth need to attend a training program and score 70 percent or greater on an exam as well as pass a driving test.
