The Stevens Point City Band will take the stage at the Pfiffner Park Bandshell Wednesday, June 14 for the second of its summer concert series.

The band, under the direction of Kathryn Kawleski has put together a program destined to leave audience members “In the Mood for Love” including Glen Miller Classics “In the Miller Mood”, “A Gershwin Tribute to Love”, “Selections from The King and I”, “Latin Celebration”, “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” from Wagner’s Lohengrin and “Symphonic Dances from Fiddler on the Roof”.

John Phillip Sousa’s “Prince Charming March” will be the music for the weekly children’s march.

Making its premier March 29, 1951 at the St. James Theatre, “The King and I” was an instant hit with a Broadway run of 1,246 performances. This was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s fifth musical and was based on the book “Anna and the King of Siam”, a novel by Margaret Landon. Yul Brynner was awarded the Tony for Best Featured Actor with the Best Actress award to Gertrude Lawrence. The show was named Best Musical.

“Fiddler on the Roof” hit the Broadway stage in 1964 and was the first to run for over 3000 performances.

Featuring music by Jerry Bock, Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein the show, at one point, was the longest running musical in history at almost 10 years on the stage. The show took home nine Tony Awards including Best Musical Score, Direction, Choreography, and Book. The musical is based on the “Tales of Tevye and his Daughters” by Sholem Aleichem.

Michele’s Restaurant and Catering of Stevens Point will provide food for purchase before and during the concert. Concerts are free and held Wednesday evenings through August 2. Audience members should bring chairs or blankets for seating.

In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the gymnasium at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1919 Wyatt Ave., Stevens Point.
